What is the NDIS in Australia?

Updated: Sep 19, 2023

The National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) is a revolutionary approach to disability care in Australia. It is the first of its kind in the world, and it's revolutionising how Australians with disabilities access the care and support they need.

The NDIS was launched in 2013, and was gradually rolled out across Australia. More than 550,000 people with permanent, or long-term, disabilities are receiving life-changing support through the scheme. The scheme is a person-centred, ‘no wrong door’ approach to support, which replaces the traditional block model, whereby people with disabilities accessed their services through one provider or pathway, such as through a state or territory government. Now, with the NDIS, people can work with independent providers who understand their individual needs.

Bayside Admin & Bookkeeping experience

Our director Lauren worked with a disability services provider when the NDIS launched. She undertook a significant amount of training to be able to understand the scheme and became a qualified NDIS Plan Manager. The learning was ongoing, and soon Bayside Admin & Bookkeeping were being asked to assist NDIS Providers with their administration and bookkeeping, due to their level of knowledge and reputation for honesty, fairness and personalised support.

NDIS Service & Support Planning

The NDIS has changed the way disability service and support planning works. It is now based on individual plans developed to meet personal needs and goals. These plans are developed in partnership with NDIS planners, who help people set their own financial goals and coordinate the services and support they need, while reporting on their progress. People also receive help to build their capacity to address their own goals in learning, health, and social and economic participation.

The NDIS includes a system of insurance, meaning that if an individual experiences a disability-related event or requires more support, they can access it. The scheme also means that people with a disability can apply to receive the supports and services they need, regardless of income or where they live in Australia.

Overall, the NDIS is an incredibly successful government initiative that has transformed the way people with disabilities receive support and services in Australia. It offers a more person-centred and empowerment-based approach to care. Enabling people with disabilities to get the support they need to live the life they choose.
